Increased risk of disease from sugar
There is too much sugar in our food. Physicians have long warned that sugar makes you fat, sick and addictive. But who is actually to blame? Is it the industry that already mixes sugar in baby food or the consumer who likes to buy sweets? A comprehensive US study has shown an immediate increased risk of fatal heart disease as a result of society's increased sugar consumption.
Earlier studies have already shown that excessive sugar consumption can lead to obesity, dental diseases or diabetes, with all its negative health effects such as eye diseases, kidney damage and damage to nerve cells. The study found that one in ten Americans consumed more than a quarter of their daily diet in the form of sugar. The scientists from the CDC health authority published their results in the specialist magazine "JAMA Internal Medicine". This was the first large-scale national study on the subject to analyze data from national health surveys of more than 30,000 Americans from 1988 to 2010. These were primarily questions about diet.
To evaluate the data, the researchers divided the participants into five categories, with the mass of sugar consumption being the criterion for the classification. The lowest level included people who covered less than ten percent of their daily calorie needs through sugar. In the last group, people with a sugar content of more than 25 percent were in their daily diet. According to the study, they were found to be three times more likely to develop fatal heart disease than people who consumed little food with fortified sugar.

"Too much sugar not only makes us fat; it can also make us sick," wrote Laura Schmidt, an expert in health policy at the University of California.
